About Moritake Laboratory
The Moritake Laboratory at the Institute of Industrial Science (IIS), The University of Tokyo, is a new laboratory established in October 2025. Building on metasurfaces and nanophotonics, we pursue research on new optical physics and optical functionalities. Let’s enjoy ambitious research that bridges fundamentals and applications, physics and engineering, and theory and experiments—all at once!

Message
The Moritake Lab is newly established, but we are conducting cutting-edge research in close collaboration with our previous institution (Institute of Science Tokyo) and a variety of research groups.
Our computational and experimental facilities are already in place, and we also have plenty of laboratory space—so you can gain the rare experience of building a brand-new experimental setup from scratch.
Our field has advanced significantly by bringing ideas from condensed-matter physics, quantum physics, and related areas into photonics.
That is why we value an attitude of learning, thinking, and trying across disciplines, not only within optics.
If you love physics in general and want to study it deeply, this is an ideal field.
In research, people often say, “Don’t just follow others.”
But in reality, the results that truly change the world are often built on countless small steps.
So I want to say this—deliberately:
It’s okay to follow. —As long as you keep going until you overtake.
As your “first step toward changing the world,” start by getting your hands moving and running forward.
Run with ambition and strategy—and we will think together while we run.
Before you know it, there will be no one ahead of you, and an unexplored landscape will open up before your eyes.
Lab Admission / Joining the Lab
If you wish to join our laboratory, you must pass the entrance examination for the Department of Applied Physics, Graduate School of Engineering.
Please refer to Here for details on the graduate admissions process.
We also welcome JSPS Research Fellows and other research associates.
Lab Visits
Laboratory tours and visits are always welcome.
Please feel free to contact us anytime.
